Axel Daniël Drieënhuizen is geboren op 17 oktober 2009. Op basis van onrust en specifieke oogbewegingen, is hij begin januari 2010 opgenomen in het Diakonessenziekenhuis en na een eerste analyse doorgestuurd naar het Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis. Een onzekere en intensieve periode brak aan met veel akelige informatie en belastende onderzoeken. Axel blijkt een erfelijke, ongeneeslijke, recessieve stofwisselingsziekte te hebben. Een peroxisomale afwijking in het Zellweger spectrum. Bij peroxisomale ziekte raakt de afbraak van afvalstoffen verstoord waardoor ze zich ophopen in de cellen. Dit veroorzaakt ten slotte schade aan organen ( lever,nieren,hersenen) en weefsels. Op dit moment heeft hij verborgen reflux, obstipatie, verminderd hoorvermogen en tapetoretinale dystrofie. De psycho motorische ontwikkelachterstand wordt steeds meer merkbaar. Axel zijn levensverwachting is onzeker evenals de kwaliteit van leven. Onwerkelijk...ongelooflijk...onbegrijpelijk, vooral omdat Axel zo'n gezellig kereltje is, die makkelijk lacht. Vooral als hij wordt geknuffeld en gekieteld.
